Eric Clapton is best-known for his musical talent, but his investment skills would be the envy of most investment professionals.  In 2001 Eric Clapton bought three paintings by Gerhard Richter for what was then the huge sum of £2 million (US$3.2 million).

In 2012 the rock guitarist sold one of these paintings for US$34 million at Christies,  a sum that would go down in history as the highest priced ever paid at auction for the work of a living artist.

STOP PRESS – AUCTION RESULTS:-

Gavin Gardiner Ltd’s first auction of 2013 of Fine Modern and Vintage Sporting Guns and Rifles saw a historically and internationally significant rare “Russian Purdey”, that was presented to British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan by Russian President Nikita Krushchev on the occasion of MacMillan’s Historic 1959 State Visit to Russia – one of the key points in the Cold War – sell for £21,600 to a collector, who was bidding on the telephone. The auction took place on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Sotheby’s, 34-35 New Bond Street, London. Remaining in a new unfired condition and with presentation inscription in a gold plaque, the 12-bore gun was made to Purdey specifications by the Tula State Armoury and carried an estimate of £20,000 and £30,000.
