Fashion and Shopping

One of the joys of shopping in a cathedral city like Winchester is the abundance of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and bars run mostly by the owners, so that you develop a close relationship with them and in many cases you become friends as well as customers. I also have huge sympathy for the independent retailer battling against all the problems which confront them, such as avaricious landlords, unpredictable bankers, VAT inspections, the cost of staff, and the problems of physically getting customers to your shop despite the difficulties of ‘one-way’ systems, restrictions on parking, and the vicissitudes of the English climate.

Having spent twelve years trying to help make a delicatessen profitable in a prime position, and with a celebrity chef as a partner, we were forced to ‘throw in the towel’ when the landlords almost doubled the rent, so I understand the challenges faced on a daily basis by the independent retailer.

Despite all the obstacles placed in their path, I never cease to be amazed by their vision and determination to provide a quality service resulting in an enjoyable shopping experience for their customers, whose loyalty they depend upon for their survival. This a truly symbiotic relationship.

So, this is our tribute to that special breed that continues to provide us with the pleasures of shopping in a wonderful environment, and for an astonishing range of products and services, which in Winchester include the following; a cobbler, a purveyor of specialist teas, Italian deli, Polish, Spanish and Chinese food shops, several jewellers, wine shops, a kitchen shop, furniture shops, an artists’ supplier, an old fashioned stationer, a gunsmith, interior designers, a camera shop, an independent travel agent, a shop selling ladies (and men’s) underwear! an internationally renowned hairdresser and several cafes, bars and pubs.

We could not include them all, but I am pleased that we have got a good ‘cross-section’ of the best of the independent shops in Winchester to give you a ‘feel’ for the place, which will hopefully encourage you to visit this ancient city, and experience the joy of shopping in this environment. So, here is our selection of the ‘crème de la crème’ of Winchester’s independent shops.

BISTRO LA PLACE and FROGGIES BAR

Bistro la Place & Froggies Bar Winchester

Occupying the best location for a restaurant  in Winchester is La Place and Froggies Bar with splendid views of the Cathedral.  Co-owned and managed by the French duo, Gael and Seb, it has earned a well-earned reputation for first-class service and care for their customers.

Whatever time of day one can be assured a of a warm French  ‘acceuil’ .  How satisfying for us Francophiles to know that there are French natives who actually feel that they have a better chance of running a business in our country than their own and aren’t we the more richer for that?

Bistro La Place & Froggies Bar Winchester Interior

Downstairs is Froggies Bar and Bistro where one can enjoy a morning coffee and later partake of a delicious bistro lunch from the Prix Fixe and Special Menus or linger through the afternoon for a ‘glass’ of something.  By the evening Froggies Bar becomes more vibrant yet always discerning, with a continental atmosphere for easy conversation.  Food is still served downstairs during the evening but for more formal dining there is upstairs where there is a distinct French ambiance and a choice from the A La Carte and Plats du Jour Menus and possibly the restaurant best table for four set in the bow window overlooking the Square and the Cathedral.

The Vintage Magazine cannot praise this Bistro La Place & Froggies more highly as we have held many a ‘business meeting’ here and some of our best ideas have evolved over a fine glass of their house wine!

Bistro La Place & Froggies can be found at, 9 Great Minster Street, Winchester SO23 9HA

CADOGAN & COMPANY – A WINCHESTER INSTITUTION exterior of Cadogan & Co with summer hanging baskets

Cadogan & Company is situated in the middle of the prettiest street in Winchester, The Square, which runs parallel with the High Street and the Cathedral grounds.

Cadogan has been owned and run by Alex Edwards for over twenty years, and is still one of the most popular shops in Winchester, combining highly personal service with a huge range of quality clothing brands.

It is the sort of shop where you walk in and spend the first 15 minutes having a chat with Alex, or some old friend you have bumped into, but it is also an Aladdin’s Cave of goodies both for ladies and gentlemen, stocking  clothes by Amanda Wakeley, Hartford, Max Mara, Nougat, Gant, Avoca, Anonymous, 120 per cent Linen, Barbour, Hoss, Marella, Petrovitch and Robinson, David Meister, Luis Civit, Vivi,  Barbara Shwarzer, ELISA, Cavaletti, Carina, Ralph Lauren. Hunter, Dubarry, and many more as well as Bags, Shoes, Hats, and accessories. Cadogan & Co interior

They also have a fine array of men’s clothing from smart to casual, and as someone who is allergic to shopping,  I am prepared to admit that  Cadogan is the only place I shop at in Winchester, or anywhere else for that matter!

It really is a shop where you could take your wife, or son, or daughter and find exactly what they want for any occasion, chosen from an extensive range of clothing from around the world combining well-known ‘designer’ names with more eclectic designers.

Alex Edwards knows everyone who is anyone in Winchester and should really be subsidised by the Independent Schools Organisation since he employs most of their ex-pupils whilst they looking for their vocation in life, and his staff are numerous and courteous, so customers always receive individual attention.

Famous people who shop there include Colin Firth, Tara Palmer-Tompkinson, Dervla Kirwen, Alexandra Cheung, Colin Firth, Hugh Bonnevile and his wife, Rupert Parry-Jones, James Martin, Isabella Anstruther Gough-Calthorpe, and Gabriella Wilde.

Whoever you are, you will receive a warm welcome, and individual attention, qualities which are sadly lacking in most shops these days.

Alex Edwards of Cadogan & Co WinchesterAlso, Alex Edwards supports various charities and Cadogan & Co. have regular ‘Fashion Shows’, promoting its various suppliers, and the proceeds go to one of his charities.

So, the next time you are in Winchester, do go and introduce yourself to Alex, and tell him he was recommended by Robert Jarman and The Vintage Magazine, and hopefully he will still talk to you!

The Address is: Cadogan & Company, 30 The Square, Winchester SO239EX

WINE UTOPIA, WINCHESTER

Utopia Wine Shop Winchester

We, in Winchester, are delighted that Wine Utopia  have chosen our city to open their second shop in the delightful setting of St. Thomas Street in August of this year.

Wine Utopia began in September 2011 with a wine list, a mail order service and a handful of local wine tasting events but graduated to its first shop on the High Street in Stockbridge in July 2012.

Owner Rachel Gibson started out in the wine trade as a graduate trainee with Majestic Wine back in 1999.  After seven years managing various stores, ending up in Winchester, she moved on to work for an independent merchant for four years, travelling extensively round the wine producing regions of the world, before making the decision to set up on her own.  Her particular passion is for those wines from New Zealand.
