LIFE OF A CHALK STREAM by Simon Cooper

It all depends; if you are looking for great literature, poetic prose, something to impress the intellectual spirit, then Life of a Chalk Stream is not the best place to start. If you are looking for enlightenment, a window into a different world and the passion of one man for his métier, then read this book.

It is clearly written from the heart. The structure is prosaic but you understand completely where he is coming from. It makes no demands other than to enjoy the world the author enjoys and to take you through his delights with an invitation to share.

Longthorne Gunmakers have, in a few short years achieved their aim to produce, entirely ‘in-house’, a traditional English shotgun of unquestionable quality at a more affordable cost than many currently available, bringing excellence and accuracy to a much wider market.

In the process they have invented and patented an entirely new production process which makes their guns stronger and lighter, something which other well-established gun makers have been trying to achieve for over 200 years.

Introducing the Salmon Rivers of Iceland by Roy Arris.

As a salmon fishing destination Iceland has everything going for it, including having no mosquitoes or biting midges! Sitting in the middle of the North Atlantic, hanging from the Arctic Circle so to speak, it is far enough from the hub-bub of Europe or North America, yet easily accessible by air (under three hours from London, and in less than two hours from Glasgow). Icelandic salmon also benefit from the island’s strategic position as they are relatively close to the ocean feeding grounds and they are allowed to travel back to their home rivers without being molested by any commercial fishing in the surrounding seas or along its coast.

A woman only knows she’s a good shot when the men stop telling her she is…

 Sir Joseph Nickerson

Shooting grounds are literally crawling with lady guns, especially the ones in the Home Counties, at around 9am after the school run.   Over the past 10 or 15 years the different shooting schools have really pushed their marketing at women and it’s worked.  Shooting instructors report that women learn a lot faster and listen more carefully to instructions than male shots – they really do get very good at it much more quickly.  Some go on to become competitive clay shots and say it’s the perfect antidote to a stressful home life bringing up young children!  The knock on effect is that lady guns are no longer so few and far between on the shooting field these days.    This is great for the sport, and shooting certainly cannot be accused anymore of being a purely male preserve.

Our intrepid Doctor, Bruce Dunlop has been on his travels again – this time in search of the ultimate fishing experience in Lesotho:-

It is the elephant in the room.  Huge, high and imposing but few people seem to now it is there.  Even in South Africa very few have noticed Lesotho.

Some facts.  It sits in the middle of the Republic of South Africa, an independent kingdom and proud of its monarch.  It is high.  The entire country is above 1000m in altitude and as a consequence is quite cool, you can even ski after a fashion in the Maloti Mountains.  Its population is about 2 million and although there is some mining for diamonds and a little industry the majority of the population lives on subsistence farming, pastoral pursuits and remittances from family members working in South Africa.
